New Offering: Selectboard Orientation and Onboarding

January 28, 2025
Good Governance: Accountable, Transparent, Responsive, Consensus Oriented, Participatory, Inclusive, Following Rule of Law, Efficient

This spring, the Vermont League of Cities & Towns (VLCT) will conduct an innovative project specifically designed to strengthen and empower legislative bodies one town at a time.

This all-new in-person workshop will combine essential legal knowledge with vital interpersonal skill building – to inspire confidence and equip selectboard members with the necessary skills to not only navigate the complexities of public service but also make meetings more enjoyable and productive. This is a pilot project: just two towns will be selected from all that apply for the unprecedented and exciting opportunity.

In these engaging in-person workshops, VLCT will work directly with each town’s selectboard in their town office.

  • We will guide the selectboard members through topics that outline their roles and responsibilities, emphasize transparency, and foster trust both between board members and with the public.
  • Participants will learn, in the course of interactive walk-through scenarios and discussions about best practices, how to enhance their communication, prioritize their municipal work, and engage volunteers – ultimately setting the stage for a more cohesive and smoothly functioning board.

The Selectboard Orientation and Onboarding pilot project will be held on site in the two selected municipalities in late March or early April. We are currently developing selection criteria and guidelines for participation.
